PC doesn't recognize RAM - you can do that
You have expanded or replaced the working memory of your PC, but the PC does not recognize the RAM. We show you here what you should and should do.
PC does not recognize RAM: check compatibility
Depending on the motherboard, only certain types of RAM can be installed. You should pay attention to the following parameters when buying the new RAM. You can find out exactly which RAM you need in the operating instructions for your mainboard.
- The storage type: There are now several different storage types. A basic distinction is made in current desktop systems between DDR, DDR2, DDR3 and now also DDR4. Make sure you bought the right type of storage. You cannot mount the wrong type of memory on your mainboard. So don't use violence! You can also use programs such as CPU-Z to check which type of memory you are using.
- The memory clock: Natively, only a maximum clock rate is supported by the mainboard and the processor. So it makes no sense to buy memory that has a much higher clock speed. Although this is possible, it usually costs more money and the additional performance of the RAM cannot be used easily. You can also optimize your working memory further.
- The RAM manufacturer: For optimum performance, you should always use the same manufacturer and the same model for all RAM bars. Different manufacturers may not be compatible with each other despite the same performance values.
- The number of available RAM slots: Modern motherboards offer either two or four RAM slots, of which you can use as many as you like. If you do not occupy the full number of slots with RAM, please refer to the operating instructions for your mainboard. Here it is recorded which RAM slots should be filled first for optimal performance and which can only remain free.
- The Windows version: Under Windows you must note that you have to install a 64-bit version of your operating system for more than 4 GB of RAM. With a 32-bit version you can install more RAM, but you cannot use it.
PC does not recognize RAM: memory capacity is not recognized
If you have already bought your RAM and installed it on the mainboard, it can happen that not all performance is recognized despite all factors.
- First check in the Control Panel whether the total memory capacity is displayed. To do this, go to "Control Panel", first click on "System and Security", then on "System" and look there under "Installed RAM (RAM)" to the specified value.
- If the value is not correct, you should first check your memory for errors.
- If the problem could not be solved, you should check step by step whether all RAM bars are functional. To do this, shut down the PC, install one of your memory modules, start your PC and check the displayed memory size as just described.
- If all memory bars are intact, you can add one module to your system one after the other in the same way. Always switch off the PC before installing a RAM module and also observe the operating instructions for the allocation of the memory banks.
- How to find out where the problem is. If there is a defect on one of the RAM latches or the motherboard, you can exchange the parts under the warranty.
Test RAM of the PC - how it works
In this practical tip, we will tell you how you can optimize your working memory.
