PC hacked? This is how it can be found out
If your PC has been hacked, there are several signs that you can use to find out. We'll show you how to spot a hack.
PC hacked: How to find out
If the hacker has done his job well, only professionals are able to find out. Comparatively simple hacks can, however, be exposed:
- Task Manager: Open the Task Manager and go to the "Performance" tab. If the RAM, CPU or hard disk is permanently strained, this is a sign of a hack.
- Processes: Then switch to the "Processes" tab and go through the entire list. If a name strikes you as strange or if the process causes a high workload, the culprit could be found. Google after the process.
- Internet: If you have been hacked and your system is still being used by the attacker, an active Internet connection is required. Disconnect the computer from the Internet and check what changes there are.
- Virus scan: Since the hack may contain malicious files on your computer, we advise you to check it with the free virus scanner Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
How to protect yourself from a PC hack
- Anti-virus software: Virus protection is essential in Windows. Malicious files are discovered and deleted.
- Updates: Windows is plugging new holes in its systems every month. Windows updates should also be installed regularly.
- Firewall: The key to fighting a hack is the firewall. If this is deactivated for games or other applications, you are almost at the risk of a hack.
