PC: Set the headset correctly - so it'll work
If you connect a headset to your PC, you must first set it up correctly. We'll show you how to best configure the recording and playback quality.
Select the headset as the default recording device
If your computer or notebook has a built-in microphone, this is usually selected as the standard recording device. To activate your headset, you need to change this setting:
- Right-click the volume icon on your taskbar. You can find it at the bottom right next to the date and time.
- Then select "Recording devices" in the pop-up window.
- Look for the name of your headset in the list. Usually there is already the entry "microphone" for notebooks and laptops, which refers to the built-in microphone. Select your headset and click "Set as default". Then close the window by clicking "OK".
Set headset as playback device
Typically, computers automatically recognize external audio devices such as headsets and speakers. If your PC continues to output the sound through other speakers, you must set your headset as the playback device.
- To do this, right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar again.
- Now select "Playback Devices".
- Find the entry of your headset in the list and also set it using the "As standard" button.
Skype sound is not played from the headset - so choose your headset for Skype
A common problem is that Skype's audio continues to be transmitted through another speaker. You can set this up in the Skype settings:
- Open Skype and click on "Options" in the "Actions" menu.
- Switch to the audio settings and also select your headset under "Loudspeaker".
Also make sure that the volume on your headset itself is turned up. Some models have buttons or wheels on the cable or on the headphones themselves, with which you can adjust the volume. If you are unsatisfied with the sound quality, we will show you in another practical tip how to optimally adjust your sound card.
