If the PC is running but the screen remains black, this does not necessarily mean that the graphics card or monitor are defective. In this practical tip, we will show you a few tricks of what you can do so that you may get a picture on the monitor again.
1. Check the cable connections
Eventually the video cable is loose on the monitor or on the graphics card. This means that no signal can arrive and the screen remains black. Therefore, as a first approach, check the connection between the graphics card and the monitor. For safety, you can also check that the monitor power cable is properly seated.
2. Is the video cable broken?
The video cable may also be defective. To rule this out, you can replace it - if a replacement is available.
3. Connect the monitor to another graphics card
In addition to the main graphics card, PCs often have an additional graphics card integrated on the mainboard. If this is the case with your computer, connect the video cable to the other graphics card on the mainboard to check whether you might get a picture.
4. Has the graphics card engaged correctly?
Under certain circumstances, the problem can also be that the graphics card is no longer properly connected to the mainboard. Open the PC and try to gently press the graphics card into its holder. Don't use violence! If you are unsure, contact friends or acquaintances who know the inside of PCs.
5. Check the graphics card and monitor for a defect
If the other tricks do not help, there is probably a defect in the graphics card or monitor. To check this, do the following:
- If you have a replacement graphics card, replace it with the other. If this solves the problem, the graphics card is most likely defective.
- If the graphics card is OK, you can - if available - test another monitor. You can also use a TV or projector with the right connection cable as a test screen - for newer Smart TVs, for example, via an HDMI cable.
What to do if there is a defect?
Basically: If there is a defect on the graphics card or the monitor, always contact your dealer. Never attempt to repair yourself! Defective items will be repaired free of charge or even replaced within the guarantee period. Outside of the guarantee period or if you are at fault, the manufacturer usually gives you an estimate.
