Protect your PC from viruses - the best tools and tips
To effectively protect your PC from viruses and other pests, you will find numerous tools and tricks to help you with this. We show you what really works and what should not be missing on your computer.
1. Virus protection for PC
Every computer needs active virus protection because Windows cannot do this alone. However, good protection does not have to be expensive. The following virus protection programs are completely free and offer high-quality protection:
- avast Free Antivirus
- AVG Anti-Virus Free
- BitDefender Antivirus Free Edition
- Avira AntiVir Free
- Comodo Internet Security
- In the virus protection test by Stiftung Warentest you will also find these free tools at the top.
2. Surf the Internet safely
The greatest virus threat is on the Internet. If you surf on dubious, insecure websites, a threat is not long in coming. In many cases, however, your anti-virus software can protect you from these dangers.
- If an unwanted download starts on a website or if you are offered software, always refuse the download. If the software is secure, you can also find it on websites such as CHIP.de. Downloads with a size of less than 1 MB are in many cases malware, with the exception of installation programs.
- In some cases, browser vulnerabilities are exploited by viruses. To prevent this from happening, use the most current version of your browser possible. Instructions for updating the browser can be found in this practical tip.
- If you cannot correctly assess the dangers on websites, a tool like the free McAfee SiteAdvisor will help you. If you carry out any Google search, a small green, yellow or red symbol appears behind each result. For example, red websites are known to be dangerous and should not be opened at all. Avast also offers this.
3. Safe handling of spam mails
- Another popular route for viruses is email. A large part of the messages sent worldwide consists of spam mails. These are usually harmless, but some also contain malicious viruses.
- The included links and attachments are particularly dangerous. If you open a RAR or an EXE file in an attachment, a malware is often installed on your computer.
- In this practical tip and in our video, we show you how to recognize spam mails and how to deal with them correctly.
4. Install Windows updates regularly
- Even if you are often annoying, take time and fail from time to time, Windows updates are important for the security of your computer.
- In the Control Panel you will find the "Windows Update" item under the "System and Security" category. Always install the latest available updates here.
- Tip: The "Malicious Software Removal Tool" is also always available for download. The installation of the updates is delayed by a few minutes, but your computer is also checked for known malware.
5. Check the computer for viruses
Even if you follow the above steps exactly, a virus infection can occur. In this case, you should rely on independent virus scanners.
- The free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program works extremely reliably both in the detection and removal of viruses. A regular check cannot hurt.
- The so-called adware is harmless, but much more annoying. This annoys you with advertising and influences actions in your browser. With the AdwCleaner you can regularly check your system for adware.
- If a persistent virus has made it onto your computer, you have to take further measures. In the following practical tip you will find detailed instructions.
