Pctspk.exe - what is it?
The process "pctspk.exe" appears in the Task Manager on some computers. In this practical tip, we clarify whether the file is secure and how you can check it.
pctspk.exe is a modem driver
- The process "pctspk.exe" stands for "PC Tel Modem Driver" and belongs to onboard modems of the company "PC tel".
- The file simulates the tones of hardware modems.
- They are often installed in laptops or netbooks. Under no circumstances should you uninstall or deactivate the driver when using the modem on your laptop.
- To determine whether the process is safe, you can open the Task Manager with the key combination [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Del].
- In the Manager click on "Processes" and then right-click on the entry "pctspk.exe". Here you select "Properties" and find the location of the process next to "Location:".
- If the Windows folder appears here, it is probably a virus or spyware.
- In this case, check the PC with a security program like "Avira AntiVir" and with an anti-malware software like "Malwarebytes".
If you are not using the modem, you can deactivate the process. You can find out how to switch off unnecessary services in Windows 8 on the next page.
