- In order to be able to use the beneficial invention of the automatic creation of a table of contents, you have to provide all headings and possibly also the subheadings with a heading format. You can find this in Word, OpenOffice, LibreOffice and Co.
- There are two ways to do this: You always do the same thing when you set the heading or you mark all headings when you are done and then format them together.
- It has proven to be useful to format the headings for long texts and to move the formatting to the end of the work for shorter - still manageable - texts.
- To format a heading, select the relevant text, go to the "Start" tab in Word and then select one of the headings in the Style dialog box. You will find detailed instructions in this Word article and for OpenOffice.
- Tip: If you want to format all headings at the same time, hold down the [Ctrl] key while you select the corresponding text. If you also want to list the headings of paragraphs in the table of contents, you should give them a slightly smaller heading and the type Heading 2.
