Adobe Photoshop offers extensive options for filling a selection. In this article we show how the individual variants work.
Fill the selection with color in Photoshop
Marking a selection in Photoshop and filling it with a simple color is not difficult. How to proceed step by step:
- First insert the relevant image in Photoshop. If you have already opened a picture or graphic with several layers, make sure that you have activated the correct layer - i.e. the one in which you want to make a selection.
- Select one of the selection tools in the upper part of the toolbar. This can be a simple rectangular frame. You can just as well cut out objects according to their color.
- Once you have made the selection in Photoshop, right-click on it and go to the "Fill area" item.
- In the dialog box you will now see the "Fill with" option. Here you can select the desired fill color. For example, this can be black, white, medium gray, the foreground or the background color. You can also specify a completely new color.
- If you then click "OK" in the dialog box, the area will be filled accordingly.
- Alternatively, you can fill the selection with a gradient. To do this, you create your selection as described and then draw a gradient with the gradient tool.
Photoshop: Fill selection based on content
It becomes much more interesting with the "Content-based fill" function, in which Photoshop automatically calculates a fill for your selection. The surrounding areas in the image are used for this.
- What sounds complicated is very simple in practice. First you create a selection again and right-click on it.
- At "Fill with", this time select "Content-based" and click "OK".
- Depending on the size of the image and the computing power of your computer, it may now take a moment for the result to be visible. Photoshop now fills the selection to match the surrounding pixels.
- Tip: If you are not yet satisfied with some areas of the filling, you can mark them again and fill them based on content. The smaller the selection and the more homogeneous the background, the better the result.
