Photoshop: removing noise - the best tips
With Photoshop, you can remove the familiar image noise on images. In this practical tip, we will show you how and what you should consider.
Noise: What is it and how can I remove it?
Noise occurs when there is insufficient light to expose your image sufficiently.
- In this case, each camera automatically increases the so-called ISO value. This brightens the picture, but causes picture noise.
- Image noise is added pixels of your camera, which do not contain any necessary color information but only disturb the image.
- You can't just undo this process. Even with "Photoshop" you can never completely remove noise without loss. However, there are some tricks you can use to get the picture a little nicer.
Remove noise with Photoshop
In order to keep the quality loss when removing the image noise to a minimum, you should first reduce the image to the required size.
- Paste the image into Photoshop and make a copy of the background layer.
- Before correcting the image, you should reduce your image, if possible. By calculating the size down, part of the image noise is also automatically removed. We'll show you how to shrink images in Photoshop here.
- After reducing the image, click on "Filter" and the "Camera Raw Filter" in the menu bar.
- Now click on the "Details" tab on the right side, represented by two triangles of different sizes.
- Under "Noise Reduction" you can now remove noise with the "Luminance" slider.
- With the other controllers, you define an area that should not yet be recorded when reducing noise. For example, if you set the Luminance Details slider higher, Photoshop tries to protect details in the image. The image noise is not removed in these areas.
- In general, you should handle the controls very carefully and only select small values. Usually a slight lifting of the luminance control is sufficient.
- After you are satisfied with the image noise, confirm with "OK" at the bottom right.
