In this image editing tip, we explain how you can create an oil paint effect in the latest version "Photoshop CC2014".
Create an oil paint effect in Photoshop CC
The graphics software "Photoshop" developed by Adobe brings numerous innovations and changes in the current version "Photoshop CC2014". For example, the frequently used "Oil Paint" effect has been removed from the Photoshop filter palette. In this tutorial we show you how you can use the free alternative plugin "GREYCstoration" to add the oil color filter to your range again:
- The "GREYCstoration" plugin is not used directly to make an image look like an oil painting. The algorithm actually acts as a noise reducer. However, when you enter values correctly, it smoothes photos so well that images look as if they were painted in oil paint. "GREYCstoration" is therefore an optimal alternative to the original filter.
- You can download the free plug-in for the oil paint filter here. Note: The plugin only works under Windows.

After successfully downloading "GREYCstoration", do the following:
- After the download you have to unzip the files. A suitable packing program is for example "WinRAR". Specify the location where the files are to be saved unpacked.
- Open the respective storage location and copy the two files "Greyc-helper.bin" and "Greyc-x64.8bf" into the plug-in folder of "Photoshop CC2014".
- You can usually find this folder under drive "C" -> "Programs" -> "Adobe" -> "Adobe Photoshop CC2014" -> "Plug-ins". Confirm the administrator query so that the copying process is carried out.
- Then start "Photoshop" to use the new oil paint effect in the menu bar under "Filters", "Noise" and "GREYCstoration" (see screenshot). A new window is opening up. Depending on the intensity of the effect, you can enter any values here. You can understand your settings via the preview window. Tip: The effect of the oil paint effect arises from a "strength" of 1000.
