In this photo tip, we explain how you can set the display for the actual print format in the Photoshop image editing program.
Set the print format display in Photoshop
The professional photo editing software Photoshop can display your edited photo in the finished output size via the print format display. However, you must first correctly set the print format once:
- Start Photoshop and open the desired image. The appearance of your photo in Photoshop, as in reality, depends on the settings made for the units of measurement, the digital rulers and the resolution of your screen.
- So that you can set the print format display exactly, you have to measure the visible display area of your monitor in width with a ruler. Enter your measurement in millimeters.
- Then divide your measured number by 25.4 so that you get your screen width in inches.
- Now calculate the first number of the screen resolution of your computer using your measured screen width in inches. The result is the PPI value. This value specifies the pixels per inch that are necessary for setting the print format display. Tip: You can read the screen resolution under "Control Panel" and "Adjust screen resolution".
- Type [Ctrl] + [K] in Photoshop to open the Preferences menu. Finally, under "Units of measurement & rulers" you only have to enter your calculated PPI value in the line behind "Screen resolution". Confirm your entry with "Ok". Your photo will now be shown in Photoshop in the same size as it will ultimately be printed out.
- Example: Measured display width of the monitor = 364 mm. 364: 25.4 = 14.33 inch. With a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, the following PPI value is calculated: 1920 px: 14.33 inch = 139.98 ppi.
