Photoshop: Create your own pattern - how it works
Creating your own Photoshop patterns allows you to make your images even more creative with simple means. This practical tip and the picture gallery show you how to create patterns and decorate your levels with them.
Photoshop - how to create a pattern
Download and install the powerful photo editor Adobe Photoshop. You can test the demo version free of charge for 30 days.
- First open a new document by selecting "File" in the menu bar and then "New" in the submenu. Set the size as small as possible when creating your pattern: the larger your work area, the more difficult it will be for your pattern to repeat itself seamlessly.
- In our example, we create a simple grid. Therefore, open a 2x2 pixel work surface. Tip: So that you can work precisely despite the small area, you should set the view to at least 800 percent.
- Create a new layer and hide the background layer.
- Select the »Pencil-Tool« in the left toolbar to be able to draw precisely. Color the bottom left and top right pixels in your desired color.
- In the last step, click on "Edit" in the main menu and then on "Define Pattern". Then add a name to your pattern and confirm with »OK«.
Photoshop - how to use your pattern
Double-click any layer in the "Layers" box to access the "Layer Style". This offers you a multitude of possibilities to design individual levels individually.
- Select »Pattern Overlay« in the different »Styles« and select your own pattern. Confirm with »OK« to apply the settings.
This practical tip was tested with Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 x64. In order to be able to copy our example, we will show you in another practical tip how you can insert text into pictures.
