Stop taking the pill - you should note that
You can actually stop taking the contraceptive pill at any time. However, there are a few things to keep in mind and be prepared for changes in your body.
What happens when you stop taking the pill?
There are several reasons to stop taking the pill: You may simply want to do without artificial hormone control, or you may want to have children. No matter why - stopping the pill has consequences for your body. Depending on the manufacturer, the pill contains one or more hormones: the female sex hormones estrogen and progestogen.
- You can simply stop taking the pill at any time if you have only taken it for contraception. However, it makes sense to take a monthly pack to the end, as there may be a stopping bleeding.
- If you take the pill not for contraception, but for medical reasons, you should discuss discontinuation with your doctor beforehand.
- The hormones in the pill inhibit the messenger substances in the brain that are responsible for ovulation. If you stop taking the pill and thus the hormone intake, the natural rhythm will level off again. However, this takes time and so there may be no periods, an irregular cycle or bleeding between periods. After a few weeks, the normal cycle leveled off again.
- Taking the pill also poses risks, especially if you take the 3rd or 4th generation pill: you have a significantly higher risk of getting thrombosis or embolism. With the withdrawal of the pill, this risk decreases again. The typical water retention no longer occurs.
- The body reacts to the changed hormone intake in a variety of ways. The skin tends to have pimples before and during menstruation and can become greasy. Hair loss can also occur.
- In addition to skin symptoms, stopping the pill often has psychological effects. They often experience irritability or discomfort.
- As a further consequence, menstrual bleeding can be accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen. This can range from a light pull to severe cramps.
- After taking the pill, most women feel more like sex. The loss of artificial hormone intake also has an effect on the partner search: your sense of smell changes.
