Collecting mushrooms: when the search is worthwhile

When to collect which mushrooms - a small mushroom calendar
Most collectors go looking for mushrooms in late summer or autumn. However, you can find edible mushrooms in the forest at any time of the year.
- January to March: In the winter months until spring you will find the oyster mushroom in the forest. It does not grow on earth, but on deciduous trees.
- April to June: In April you can go looking for the tufted rasling. It not only grows in the forest, but also in parks or even in the garden.
- The mushroom season starts in May . If you prefer parasols or chanterelles, the time to collect begins in June .
- August to October: Now the high season for mushroom pickers begins. The bovist started in August.
- You will also find different types of mushrooms at this time of year. The classic autumn mushrooms also include the autumn trumpet and chestnut.
- The way into the forest is still worthwhile if you want to collect chanterelles and porcini mushrooms.
Do not collect mushrooms for good luck
Please only collect mushrooms yourself if you are very familiar with the matter.
- There is a poisonous counterpart to many edible mushrooms, which looks confusingly similar to the edible. For example, the delicious meadow mushroom can be easily confused with the highly toxic tuber agaric.
- It is better than collecting mushrooms to grow them yourself.
- If you are not really absolutely sure, leave the mushroom alone. It also does no harm to have the specimens checked by a mushroom expert. Almost every forest association has such an expert.
- You should keep your mushroom knowledge up to date. The recommendation about the edibility of a mushroom can change. For example, the green compact used to be a popular edible mushroom. Today we know that eating this mushroom can cause muscle damage.
- Danger lurks not only when collecting mushrooms. Wild mushrooms cannot be stored well, they are actually intended for direct consumption and spoil quickly.
- In addition, not every mushroom is edible in every condition. For example, the sponge stick can only be enjoyed cooked. The mushroom is poisonous when eaten raw. So you should also know how to prepare the collected mushrooms.
