Deactivate ping requests - how it works
By default, Windows responds to incoming ping requests. You can block this behavior at any time and thus deactivate it. This works with the Windows firewall and protects you from hackers, for example.
Block ping requests with Windows Firewall
The accessibility of servers and computers in a network can be tested with a ping request. We explain in another practical tip what this is good for and how a ping works. How to deactivate the requests:
- Start the Control Panel in Windows and click on "Windows Firewall".
- In the left pane, click the "Advanced Settings" entry.
- In the new window, select "Incoming rules" in the menu on the left.
- For a better overview, sort the list by name by clicking on the "Name" field.
- Now scroll to the entries labeled "File and printer release (echo request - ICMPv4 / 6 incoming)".
- Double-clicking on these entries opens another window.
- Here you can block the requests in the "General" tab by selecting "Block connection" and confirming with "OK".
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to determine your ping value.
