Record player: change needle - how it works
You should change a damaged or worn turntable needle in good time. This not only improves listening pleasure, it also protects the vinyl and avoids unnecessary damage. In this article we explain how to change the needle on your turntable.
When does the needle need to be changed?
- To recognize a worn needle, you should rely on your hearing: If the sound becomes dirty, it is probably time for a new needle.
- If the needle jumps out of the groove, this can be a clear sign that it is defective or badly worn. Jumping out of the groove can also be caused by the support weight being set too low.
- If you are not sure, you can also inspect the turntable needle: If the small tip that lies in the groove is only minimally present or has completely disappeared, it is definitely time for a new needle.
Which needle fits?
There are numerous needles on the market that differ in their type and quality. It is best to get advice from a specialist on site.
- There are diamond needles and stainless steel needles.
- Diamond needles have a longer lifespan. They do not wear out and cannot bend.
- Stainless steel needles wear out over time, but they are much cheaper than diamond tips.
How to change the needle on the turntable
How exactly the needle change works depends on the turntable and the tonearm. The procedure can vary depending on the model. In any case, you should switch off the turntable to change the needle and disconnect it from the power supply.
- Most systems can be pulled out very easily. They are held only by a small mechanical resistance.
- On other models, the needle is held in place by a fastener. In this case, first open the lock and then pull the needle out to the front.
- In both cases, however, you should work with sensitivity and not pull the needle roughly. This can damage the cartridge.
- The installation of the new needle is just as easy: Carefully push the needle into the needle carriage from the front. If it is held by a lock, close it again after inserting it.
