Pokemon Go How to play: Step by step to become a Pokemeister
New to Pokemon Go? With these game instructions you start from the beginning of the game. Learn how to catch Pokemon, fight with you, and which places to watch out for.
Start of the game in Pokémon Go - This is how your career as a Pokémaster begins
- First, after starting the app, you can choose a user name and create a trainer. However, this has no effect on the later course of the game.
- You will then be given a choice of three starter Pokémon, one of which you will need to catch.
- Touch one of the Pokémon. Whichever you choose doesn't matter, all three Pokémon are equally strong. They differ only in the element class: the tortoise Schiggy stands for water, the walking bud Bulbasaur is a plant Pokémon and the mini dragon Charmander represents fire.
- Insider tip: With an Easter egg, you can catch Pikachu as a starter Pokémon right at the start.
Interesting places in Pokémon Go
In Pokémon Go, the real world on the smartphone becomes a playground. You should pay particular attention to three important symbols on the map.
- Pokéstops: Here you can get free items. When you see one of the blue Pokéstops around you, tap it and turn the icon. You will then receive 3 items. These include, for example, Poké balls or eggs.
- Arenas: In arenas you can fight with your Pokémon. When you tap an arena for the first time, you have to choose Team Blue, Red or Yellow. Choose the same team as your friends here to fight together. However, you can only fight in an arena when you have reached level 5.
- Pokémon: As you move, new Pokémon appear regularly in the game. Tap this and flick a Poké Ball from below onto the Pokémon to catch it.
Pokémon Go: catch Pokémon
Come and grab them: a key part of the game is catching Pokémon. But not every Pokemon is everywhere:
- Think about what type of Pokémon you want to catch. Water Pokémon are found near water, while Grass and Beetle Pokémon are more likely to be found in forests and parks.
- If you catch a Pokémon, you get XP and candy. Sweets are important for the further development of Pokémon.
- If you release a Pokémon after catching it, you will receive some extra XP.
- Don't use Master Poké Balls at the beginning. They are far too valuable, you should save them for rare and legendary Pokémon.
- Don't catch every Pokémon, just your favorite Pokémon that you can fight with. This procedure is particularly worthwhile if the Pokéballs are scarce. You should definitely catch a rare Pokémon because you can trade it well.
- To catch a Pokémon, you must first touch and hold the Poké Ball. The color of the target ring around the Pokémon shows whether the Pokémon is easy or difficult to catch. The greatest chance of catching the Pokémon is when the target ring is the smallest in diameter. Then throw the ball at the Pokémon. You can also throw a curve ball with a trick.

Fight in Pokémon Go
Only those who fight often will become Pokémasters: In Pokémon Go you have to capture arenas for your team and then defend them.
- You only get to arenas from level 5. Then you have to choose team red, yellow or blue.
- If you tap on an arena you will first see the weakest Pokémon. To view all other defending Pokémon, simply swipe left.
- To occupy an arena, you must defeat all defending Pokémon in turn.
- If you visit an arena that your team already owns, you can conduct training fights there.
- You attack in a fight by tapping the display. If you tap longer, you launch a special attack. However, you can only execute this once you have charged it with normal attacks.
- You can dodge attacks by swiping left or right. Always wipe when the yellow warning is displayed.
- Before starting a fight, you should use the WP (competition points) of the fighting Pokémon to compare whether you have a chance.
- Read in the next practical tip whether you can change your team later.
