If you want to stow a power bank in your hand luggage when traveling by air, this is not always possible without problems. We will show you what regulations exist and what you have to pay attention to.
Power bank in hand luggage: You have to consider these things
There is no uniform regulation for taking power banks on planes. There is currently only one recommendation from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) that each airline takes into account differently.
- Basically, a handy power bank in hand luggage is not a problem. The IATA allows two power banks per person.
- You may only carry the power bank in your hand luggage. If you leave the battery in the case, it may happen that the case is opened and the power bank is removed.
- If you take two power banks with you in your hand luggage, you must pack both devices separately in a box or bag to avoid short circuits.
Airplane power bank: 100 Wh maximum
The Powerbank or Powerbanks together may only store a maximum of 100 Wh of energy. However, the manufacturers usually only give the capacity in mAh and the voltage in V.
- You can use the following formula to convert to Wh: Wh = mAh * V / 1000
- With the usual voltage of 5V, the capacity of the power bank must not exceed the limit of around 20, 000 mAh. You can get the RAVPower 20, 000 mAh for around 30 euros.
- This capacity is more than sufficient for a flight. You can use it to fully charge a cell phone at least 5 times.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to charge your power bank correctly.
