PRAM reset: what does it do and how does it work?
Problems with PowerPC-based Mac systems can be solved by a PRAM reset. First of all, it is important to know what a PRAM reset is and which Mac problems make sense. The reset is carried out with a key command during the start-up process.
How does a PRAM reset work?
Whenever you shut down your Mac computer, special settings are saved in a limited memory area on your hard drive - the "PRAM". These settings include the volume control of your speakers or the screen resolution. The start volume selection and information about kernel errors are also saved here. You should only carry out a PRAM reset if one of the named functional areas is affected.
- You need to shut down your Mac first.
- Now turn your computer on again.
- Before the gray start screen appears, you must now press the following keys simultaneously: Command key (⌘), Option key, P and R (see screenshot).
- You must hold these keys down until your Mac computer reboots and you hear the start tone for the second time. You can then release the buttons. The PRAM reset was carried out successfully.
