Prepaid: SIM card expired - you can do that
If you have received a message that your prepaid SIM card has expired or is about to expire, it is usually not too late. We'll show you what to do now.
Why do prepaid SIM cards expire?
- Each assigned number costs the mobile operator money. Since prepaid cards are sometimes only used for a few weeks or months, they expire after a certain time.
- This not only corrects the number of users, but also does justice to data protection. The credit on a prepaid SIM card generally never expires. A payment is still possible after deactivation.
Prepaid SIM card expired - what to do?
- Every provider does this differently. Sometimes the card is blocked after you have not topped it up for 6 months. Most providers only block the card after 2 years of inactivity.
- You will usually receive a written reminder at least one month in advance. Depending on the provider, you only need to top up the prepaid credit or simply make a call to mark the card as active again.
- After the deadline has been set, the card is finally blocked. In some cases, however, you still have up to 3 months to reactivate them.
- A payment of the credit is theoretically still possible years later. Prepaid credit must not expire. To make a payment, you must contact the respective customer service.
