Programming languages: an overview

The list of programming languages is long and growing. In our overview we introduce you to the most important languages for computers and the web.
Overview of programming languages
We present the most common programming languages here.
- PHP: The open source language was not originally intended as a full-fledged programming language, but has evolved steadily and massively over time. PHP is now the most widely used programming language on the Internet.
- Javascript: With Javascript you create interactive elements of a website. That is why the language is popular for creating web frontends. In the meantime, Javascript can be called the main language of the Internet. If you are interested in the programming language, we will show you how to program Hello World with JavaScript.
- Ruby: This programming language can actually be used universally. However, Ruby finds its main application in web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework.
Hardware-related computer languages
The hardware-related programming language is also called machine language and consists of chains of bytes.
- C ++: When it comes to performance, C ++ is the programming language of choice. It's not for nothing that Apple applications, Google or Facebook rely on C ++. However, C ++ is one of the most difficult languages to learn. To get you started, we'll show you another practical tip on how to program with C ++ Hello World.
- C: The basis of C ++ is the programming language C. Many operating systems such as Windows, Linux and iOS are programmed in C. Incidentally, C has been around since 1972, making it one of the oldest programming languages. We also have instructions on how to program Hello World in C.
- Assembly Language: This is a machine language that is very difficult to learn. Assembly language is usually only used to create instructions at the hardware level, i.e. to program microchips. You can find assembly language for example in medicine, but also in sports equipment and of course in IT.
The generalists among programming languages
Finally, we present three other open source programming languages.
- Python: This open source programming language has been used since 1991 and is extremely popular. The reason for this is not only that it can be used universally, but also that the language is easy to learn. You can find a Python tutorial for beginners in our practical tips.
- Java: The open source programming language has been around since 1995. Java can be used universally and is now also used for data processing such as cloud computing. If you want to learn Java programming, you will find the basics in another practical tip. We also explain the differences between Java and Javascript.
- C #: As a .NET programming language, C # is mainly used in the Windows environment because Microsoft has the rights. However, the .NET Framework is now open source. You can also find the best tips for your first C # program with us.
HTML is not one of the programming languages. It is a text-based markup language. If you would like to learn HTML programming, you will also find a suitable article here.
