Proxmox vs VMware: these are the differences
With Proxmox and VMware you can virtually install and use an operating system. Here we explain the differences between the two programs.
Differences between Proxmox and VMware
A virtual installation means that the operating system is not adapted and installed to the physical hardware in the computer, but is started and executed by an already installed operating system. For example, you have the possibility to change and test various things on the system without accidentally "destroying" your actual operating system.
- The differences between Proxmox and VMware lie in the business model. Proxmox is an open source application, with VMware being commercial software.
- Proxmox specializes in server virtualization. You can manage physical, virtual or even cross-platforms with Proxmox. VMware focuses more on desktop virtualization and network virtualization. However, both offer the option of cloud management.
- Both programs support Windows, Linux and UNIX. Additional operating systems supported by the community can also be used under Proxmox.
- With Proxmox, you have the option of centrally managing your servers. This can also be done with VMware, but dedicated management servers are required here.
- Proxmox also supports LXC (Linux Containers). Unfortunately, VMware does not yet support this.
- Conclusion: Proxmox is a good open source alternative to VMware. It offers various administration options and supports a large number of operating systems. VMware also offers network virtualization. VMware is also characterized by good support.
