Read out processor clock - how it works
You can read out the processor clock of your computer either via Windows yourself or a special program. We'll tell you how to do both, and which option gives more accurate results.
Read out processor clock via Task Manager
Manufacturers only specify the maximum clock rate for processors. Your computer rarely needs the full power of the CPU, which is why the clock varies continuously. You can read out your current value via the Task Manager in Windows 10:
- Press the key combination [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [Esc] to open the Task Manager. This shortcut works in all versions of Windows.
- In the "Performance" tab you will find your current processor clock under "Speed".
- You will also find an indication of your maximum processor speed above the graphic.
Alternatively: Read out processor clock using special software
The free tool "CPU-Z" shows the current processor clock a little more precisely. In addition, you will receive a lot more information about the CPU, the graphics card and other built-in hardware.
- Download the free program and start the tool.
- In the "CPU" tab, you can see the current processor clock under "Core Speed".
- Tip: You can use the "Selection" selection field to switch between the individual cores of your processor. So you can see exactly which core is loaded and how.
Tip: How to determine the CPU temperature
How to find out which processor you are using is shown on the next page.
