Reset PS3 to factory settings - how it works
If your PS3 crashes frequently, you should reset it to the factory settings. You should also do this before you sell the console.
Reset PS3 to factory settings in the system menu
To restore your console to the delivery state, you have to restore the entire PS3 system. All data is deleted from the hard disk and the settings of the Playstation are removed:
- For security, you should delete your user before formatting. A backup of your trophies and scores is also recommended. The fastest way to do this is via the built-in backup tool under "Settings> System settings> Data backup program> Backup".
- Switch to the "Settings" tab and click on "System Settings".
- Select the point "Restore PS3 system".
- Now you have the choice between "quick formatting" and "full formatting". The latter usually takes several hours, but overwrites the deleted data and checks the hard disk for errors. You should invest this time if you want to sell the console.
- Wait for the recovery. Do not disconnect the PS3 from the power during this time. The power button and the playstation button of your controller are deactivated for security.
- To ensure that your PS3 is in the delivery state, you should restart the console. If the setup wizard appears, the process has run correctly.
Reset Playstation 3 in the recovery menu
If you experience problems right from the start, you can also restore your PS3 using recovery mode:
- Keep the power button pressed until the PS3 beeps three times in a row (about 3-5 seconds).
- Connect the controller with a USB cable.
- Select the fifth point "Restore PS3 system" in the recovery menu.
- The rest of the procedure corresponds to points 4 to 6 of the system settings (see above).
