PS3 doesn't recognize games - you can do that
If your PS3 no longer recognizes a game, this may be due to the DVD or the drive. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
PlayStation 3 doesn't recognize games - that helps
- DVD: If the error has only occurred on one DVD so far, insert another one. If none of your games work, the drive is most likely defective.
- Scratch: If the PS3 detects other games, the problem is with the DVD. In many cases, you can remove the small scratches on the bottom yourself. We show you how this works in the practical tip "Repairing scratched CDs and DVDs".
- Laser: After many years of use, the laser can become dusty. You can clean the laser yourself with a screwdriver and some skill. You can find detailed instructions in the practical tip "PS3: Clean the laser - how it works".
- Update / Reset: If all of this does not help, first check whether an update is available for the PS3. If this is not the case, you still have to reset to the factory settings.
Replace the defective PS3 drive
- Warranty: If the PlayStation 3 is not older than 2 years, the device is still in the warranty period. In this case, contact Sony or the retailer where you bought the PS3.
- Repair: If the device is older, it is usually cheaper to repair or replace it with specialized repair services. Hobbyists can change the drive themselves at their own risk.
