PS3: repair drive - how it works
If your PS3 no longer reads DVDs or the drive makes loud noises, you can in many cases repair the hardware yourself. We'll show you how to look inside your PlayStation 3 and repair the drive.
Repair PS3 drive: You need it
- Tool: You need the right tool to open the PlayStation 3. Even with well-stocked craftsmen, you will rarely find the special tool. A corresponding tool set costs around 8 euros.
- Alcohol: In many cases there is a problem with the laser if the drive is defective. Cleaning alcohol is best suited for cleaning the laser. You can also get this quite cheaply from Amazon.
Step 1: remove the PS3 drive
There are different versions of the PS3, which differ slightly in their design. Under certain circumstances, there may be minor deviations from the following steps.
- Unplug the PS3 and turn it upside down. Remove all protective caps on the underside and the screws underneath.
- If you turn the console over again, the housing can be easily removed upwards. On the right side you will see a metal cover. The drive is located here.
- Remove the three screws on the cover, and then remove the two screws under the cover. Also remove all cables leading to the drive.
- Now remove the drive from the PS3 and remove all screws on the back. The metallic cover can be easily opened upwards.
- You have now reached the last level. Remove all screws on the edge of the drive and fold the black plastic cover aside. Attention: The cover always remains connected by a cable.
Step 2: repair PS3 drive
If you have opened the PS3 drive, you can now go looking for errors. The first thing you should do is clean the laser.
- Take a cotton swab and dip it in the alcohol so it doesn't drip. Wipe the lens a few times and wipe the dry side once more. The remaining alcohol evaporates after a few seconds. You can find more information in this article.
- However, the problem can also be in the mechanics. Since you have already opened the drive, it is also worth taking a look here. Check all parts carefully for their mobility and try to solve any problems found.
- If all this does not help, a new drive must be found. For this you should contact a specialist or Sony directly.
