PS3 does not play any sound through the system - what to do?

If the Playstation 3 does not play any sound on the system, there can be various reasons. In addition to the faulty cable connection to the hi-fi device, the incorrect setting of the PS3 audio output itself could also be the reason for the silence. This practical tip shows you what you need to consider so that the sound of the Playstation 3 actually reaches your ears.
Three ways of PS3 sound output
The Playstation 3 can output sound via three different connections. Here they are listed again:
- With the HDMI cable, the sound can be transmitted directly and digitally to the television connected to the Playstation 3. If you have an AV receiver, which you use to connect several HDMI devices to your television, it also receives the audio signal from the HDMI connection.
- The connection of the Playstation 3 with an optical cable or fiber optic cable is best suited for the reproduction of the sound via a hi-fi system, since there are no quality losses due to the digital transmission of the audio signal.
- The only analog transmission is via the AV adapter. However, this only makes sense if no digital interfaces are available and should not be considered further here.
No sound despite HDMI connection
If the Playstation 3 is properly connected to the TV or AV receiver with an HDMI cable (tight fit of the plug, cable is unloaded), nothing else needs to be taken into account for the physical connection. Finally, you only have to make the correct settings for the sound output on Playstation 3:
- Navigate to "Settings" in the Playbar crossbar and then to "Sound settings". Then select "Audio output setting" and confirm with the x button on the gamepad.
- Now select "HDMI" as the audio source (see picture).
- Click to the right using the directional pad to go to the setting of the output format. It is best to choose "Automatic". The Playstation independently determines the compatible formats.
- Click to the right again, check the summary and confirm the settings made with the x button.
Connect the Playstation and the system with the optical cable
You can use the optical cable (fiber optic cable) to connect the Playstation 3 directly or your TV set to the system. In both cases, you should note that the kink radius must not be too small when you lay the cable. This means that the light signal cannot be transmitted correctly or the cable can even be damaged. You should note this when connecting the system to Playstation 3 or TV:
- If the Playstation 3 is connected to the system via the optical cable, you only have to make the correct settings analogous to the first section. Only in the second step choose "Optical digital" instead of "HDMI" (see picture). There is no automatic determination of the correct format. The standard setting should be retained, since the formats supported by the system are usually difficult to find out apart from "DTS" and "Dolby Digital".
- If the TV is connected to the system via the optical cable and the Playstation 3 is connected to the TV via HDMI, you can set up the Playstation 3 according to the first section. You may also have to configure your television correctly so that the sound signal from Playstation 3 is passed on to the optical output of the television. If in doubt, the TV manual should help.
PS3 audio output through all connections
You can have the sound output through all connections on the Playstation 3 if you are not bothered by the possible simultaneous sound from the television and the system. The configuration is the easiest:
- In the crossbar, go to "Settings" and then to "Sound Settings".
- Then navigate to »Audio multiple output« and confirm with the x button on the gamepad (see picture).
- Now select "On" to activate multiple output.
