PS3: power consumption in standby and operation
Depending on which PS3 model you have, the power consumption in standby and operation is comparatively high or low. The exact power consumption of all PS3 versions can be found in our overview.
Power consumption of the original PS3
You can recognize the PS3 of the first generation by the thick, domed housing. The power consumption here is relatively high:
- The game console consumes around 170 watts when idle, i.e. when you are in the home menu.
- In Bluray playback and on YouTube, it is about 180 watts. Under full load with demanding games, the PS3 even develops into a power guzzler: the console consumes a whopping 200 watts in these situations.
- In standby (when only the red light is on), the power consumption is still a relatively high 1.22 watts. It is therefore worthwhile to completely disconnect the console if you are not going to use it for a long time.
Power consumption of the PS3 Slim
The newer versions of the Playstation 3 in the slim version are not only thinner, but also significantly more energy efficient:
- In the main menu, the game console only consumes around 75 watts.
- It is a pleasant 80 watts for movie or YouTube playback. The power consumption under full load has also been reduced: Here, the PS3 Slim only draws around 100 watts.
- The power consumption is now also okay in standby mode: With 0.36 watts, the PS3 is on par with current TVs and receivers.
