PS4: create backup on external hard drive - how it works
Since firmware update 2.50 you can backup your data from the PlayStation 4 with an external hard drive. We explain the function and also show you how you can then restore your backup data on the PS4.
Create PS4 backup on external hard drive
The PlayStation 4 allows you to back up and restore your data on an external hard drive.
- First open the system settings of the PlayStation 4.
- Select the menu item "System" and then the option "Backup and restore".
- Now plug in your USB device and select the "Backup PS4" option.
- You will now be informed that all settings, save data, screenshots, videos, patches and download data are backed up. Trophies are not saved, however, which is why you should synchronize them beforehand.
- The next screen shows how big your backup will be. You can skip the installation data of games. However, in this case you will have to download the games completely again if you reload your backup.
- The backup process begins and can take some time depending on the amount of data.
- If you want to restore your backup later, select the "Restore PS4" option in the same menu.
- If your USB device is connected, the PS4 will automatically recognize the backup and can restore it. Alternatively, you can remove it from your USB device using the "Delete backup data" option.
