PS4: firmware update - how it works
If you want to update the firmware of your PS4, this works both directly via an Internet connection and manually via PC and USB stick. We present you with both options.
PS4: Update firmware directly via the console
- Start the PlayStation 4 and open the "Settings".
- Updates are automatically searched for and downloaded via the "System software update" category.
- In the meantime, you can leave the menu and start the installation after the download is complete.
- Note: For future updates, you can set up automatic updates on the PS4.
PS4: Update system software via USB stick
Note: As an alternative to the following instructions, you can also burn the firmware onto a CD and then insert it into the PS4.
- First download the latest firmware update for the PS4.
- Connect a USB stick to your computer and remove all the data it contains.
- Create a folder on the USB stick with the name "PS4" and as a subfolder "UPDATE".
- Transfer the downloaded firmware to the "UPDATE" folder and remove the stick from the computer.
- Turn off the PlayStation 4 completely. If the orange light is still on, press and hold the power button for about 7 seconds until the light goes out.
- Insert the USB stick into the PS4 and hold the power button again for 7 seconds. Safe mode now starts.
- Select the "Update System Software" option in the menu and follow the further instructions for installation.
