With the PS4, the NAT type provides information about the security status of your online connection. You can find out exactly what the "Network Address Translation" type means in this practical tip.
Overview of the three NAT types on the PlayStation 4
If you have already browsed through the settings of the PlayStation 4, you have surely already stumbled across the "NAT type":
- NAT type 1 means that your PlayStation 4 is directly connected to the Internet via a modem. This is the most insecure connection type, because NAT type 1 means that you are connected without a firewall.
- NAT type 2 means that you are connected via a correctly configured router. You can play online and use the PlayStation Network without restrictions.
- With NAT type 3, you should check your router settings. If you cannot access the PSN, it could be a possible error. The firewall is likely to block online services.
Change PS4 NAT type - how it works
You can find out the current NAT type by opening "Network" and then "Connection status".
- The connection test helps you find the IP address of your PlayStation 4.
- With the IP address of the PS4 you can now make the settings on your router.
Change NAT type on the router
We show how to change the NAT type on the router using the FritzBox as an example. The procedure may differ slightly for other routers. You have to release different ports for the changes.
- Call up the user interface of the FritzBox in the browser and log in with your access data.
- In the menu on the left, select "Internet" and then "Shares".
- Under the tab "Port Releases" you can now enter the releases for your PS4. To do this, select the PS4 that should appear in the list and click on "Edit". Then click on "New release" and activate "Port release" here.
- Now you have to release the following ports for the PS4: TCP : 465, 983, 1935, 3478-3480, 5223, 10070-10080 and UDP : 3478, 3479, 3658, 10070. To release, follow the steps below for each of the ports mentioned one by one.
- Under "Applications" click "Other Applications".
- In the next step, enter a name of your choice for the release, for example "TCP-465-PS4" for the TCP port 465.
- In this case, select the "TCP" option under "Protocol". If you release UDP later, be sure to select the "UDP" entry at this point.
- Now you have to specify the port in the fields "Port to device", "to port" and "Port external requested (IPv4)". In this case, enter "465" here. When enabling the other ports, always enter the respective port here.
- When you click "OK", the release is complete.
