PS4: expand memory - how it works
If your PS4's memory is full, you can expand it in a few simple steps. In this practical tip, we will show you exactly how to do this.
Preparation: Back up the PlayStation 4 data
- Before you get started, we recommend that you back up your game files.
- All you need is an empty USB stick. Simply connect it to the console.
- Then go to "Settings" and click on "Manage the data saved by the application".
- Select "Stored data in system memory" and then "Copy to USB storage device".
- There you can decide which files you want to back up. Then wait for the process to be completed.
- Then download the current firmware version of the PS4 and copy it to the USB stick in the "PS4 \ UPDATE \" folder.
Choose a new hard drive for the PS4
- After you've made the backup, you'll need to look around for a new drive.
- The PS4 supports all 2.5-inch drives with up to 1.5 terabytes of storage space.
- We recommend an SSHD, i.e. a combination of a large hard disk and a small flash memory cache.
- For the Seagate Laptop SSHD with 1TB storage space you pay around 80 euros.
- Of course, you can also use a different hard drive, the decision is entirely up to you.
PS4: Install new hard drive
- Now you have to switch off the PlayStation 4 completely and disconnect it from the mains. Also remove all other cables.
- Then lay the console on a flat surface and pull the panel towards the edge with both hands.
- The hooks located there should be easy to loosen so that you can easily remove the cover.
- Inside, you must now look for the hard drive box, which is fixed with a screw. Loosen this screw with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the entire box.
- To remove the hard drive, you have to loosen a total of four screws on the box.
- Take out the old hard drive and insert the new one.
- Then you have to fix the new hard drive again with the four screws.
- Put the box back into the console and screw it tight. Finally, put the panel back on the console.
Set up the new hard drive in PlayStation 4
- After inserting the new hard drive, you must reconnect the console and switch it on.
- Switch the console to security mode by connecting the controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press and hold the "On" button for at least seven seconds until you hear a second beep.
- You will then be asked to press the PS button on the controller. Then insert the USB stick.
- Select the "Initialize PS4 (reinstall system software)" option on the console and confirm your selection.
- The system now automatically searches for the update file on the stick. If this is not found, you can also determine it manually.
- Wait for the process to complete. Then you can set up the console as usual and continue playing.
