Raspberry Pi as a PC replacement - for whom is the mini PC worthwhile?
The "Raspberry Pi" is an enticing PC replacement because of its price. However, the mini PC is not suitable as a home computer, as we explain in our practical tip.
The Raspberry Pi is only suitable for Linux users and special applications
- Since the "Raspberry Pi" is equipped with an ARM processor, you can mainly install customized Linux versions as the operating system. "Windows" has not been running (as of January 8, 2014).
- The officially recommended OS for the mini PC is "Raspbian", which is based on "Debian". If you are not familiar with Linux, you should first distance yourself from the "Raspberry Pi".
- The hardware that is lagging behind today limits the areas of application of the Mini-PC. The 512 MB RAM is currently not sufficient for home use. Important components such as network and HDMI connections are built into the "Raspberry Pi".
- For example, you can use the "Raspberry Pi" as a simple server, radio station or media center. In principle, the mini PC is suitable for all tasks that do not require large computing power.
