Raspberry Pi: set up Wake on Lan - how it works
With the current models of the Raspberry Pi, it is not possible to start it with a Wake on Lan command or to set it up. The reasons are as follows:
- With Wake on Lan a so-called "Magic Packet" is sent to the network card of the computer. This then causes the computer to start up.
- In order to receive this packet, the network card must be permanently supplied with power.
- With the Raspberry Pi, however, the network card is not directly connected to the main board, but connected via a USB hub. This means that there is no permanent power supply.
- Due to its low power consumption, the Raspberry Pi is suitable for 24/7 operation. Even with permanent full load, the electricity costs are only around six to seven euros per year.
