Install Raspbian - so it'll work
Raspbian is the most common operating system for the Raspberry Pi. In this practical tip, we will show you how to install it on your single-board computer.
Download Raspbian and flash to SD card
To install Raspbian on your Raspberry Pi, you must first download the latest Raspbian version and flash it to an SD card:
- Download the latest version of Raspbian.
- In order to flash Raspbian to the SD card, you must also download and install the "Win32 Disk Imager". Note: You can of course also use alternative software. We'll show you the steps using this free tool.
- Now insert the SD card of your Raspberry Pi into your SD card reader.
- Start the "Win32 Disk Imager" and select your downloaded Rasbian image under "Image File".
- Then you have to select the drive letter of the SD card under "Device".
- Finally, click "Write" to write the image to the SD card.
Install and set up Raspbian
After you have prepared your SD card, you can now install and set up Raspbian:
- Insert the SD card into your Raspberry Pi and additionally connect at least one network cable with internet connection, a keyboard and a monitor.
- Now you can plug in the power supply of the Raspberry.
- When the Raspberry has completely started up, a menu opens in which you can navigate with the arrow keys.
- First go to "Expand Filesystem" to be able to use the full storage space of the SD card later.
- Then you have to select the "Internationalization Options" item and then "Change Keyboard Layout". Now click with [Enter] one after the other on "Classmate PC", "Other", "German", "German", "The default for the keyboard layout", "No compose key." and finally "No".
- Now select "Internationalization Options" and then "Change Locale". Search for the entry "de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8" and select it with [Space]. Now press [TAB] and "OK". In the next step, select "en_GB.UTF-8" and then press [Enter].
- In the menu under "Internationalization Options" and "Change Timezone" you can also set your current time zone.
- In the main menu, press [TAB] until the cursor is on "Finish". Confirm the restart with [Enter].
- After your Raspberry has started up again, you should update it.
Start Raspbian Desktop
- Your Raspberry Pi is now set up. So that you don't just have to work with the console, you can start the graphical user interface with the "startx" command.
