Smoke detector: Change the battery - you have to pay attention to that
With almost every smoke detector you will have to change the battery at some point. In this article, we have summarized how such a device indicates that a battery change is necessary and what you need to pay attention to.
Change the battery in the smoke detector - you should pay attention to this
In most federal states in Germany there is a smoke alarm requirement.
- The smoke detectors approved in Germany must meet certain criteria according to a certain DIN standard. For example, a device must report this acoustically at least 30 days before the battery is empty.
- Then the smoke detector beeps every 30 seconds, notifying you of the upcoming battery change. The signal only ends when you have replaced the battery.
- Some models also provide information via a flashing LED. However, there are also many devices in which a flashing LED indicates that the smoke detector is ready for operation. A look at the operating instructions provides information about the LED signal.
- Tip : A functional smoke detector serves your safety. Therefore, do not rely solely on the signals from the device. Ideally, check the function of the smoke detector once a week. It is enough to briefly press the test button on the smoke detector. You should then hear a beep.
- With some smoke detectors it is not possible to change the battery. Then there are so-called 10-year smoke detectors. These devices are now reasonably priced, but must be disposed of and replaced as soon as the battery runs out.
- If the battery needs to be changed, do it according to the manufacturer's instructions in the operating instructions. The standard for smoke detectors also stipulates that the devices cannot be closed without a battery. If you remove the old battery, you must also insert a new one.
- It is recommended for the consumer world to use the same type of battery again. If you do not want to change the battery for a long time, you can use high-quality 9-volt lithium batteries. These last up to ten years.
