Improve room acoustics - the best tips
Improving the room acoustics is very important, especially in the recording studio. Room acoustics also play a very important role in the final sound when recording at home. In this article we show you how you can best improve room acoustics.
How to improve room acoustics
- The general rule is: the emptier the room in which you want to record, the more reverberation will occur. The size of the room also plays an important role, because: The larger the room, the more space the sound has.
- A great remedy can be carpeting or carpet in general. Due to the cushioning properties of carpet, a small part of the sound is swallowed and you get a quieter environment. Especially when you only want to record in a small room, carpeting is the first measure that is recommended.
- Another measure is to set up bookshelves or other furniture, which you then fill. Especially in the recording studio, shelves are usually used for this, which are then filled with books or CDs.
- It is best to record your voice in a corner, since this produces the least reverberation.
Acoustic foam to improve room acoustics
With acoustic foam, you can ideally prepare your room for recording. These foam sheets ensure that there is less reverb. In addition, the plates are very cheap, especially if you combine them with one of the measures mentioned above. For example, there is nothing to be said against carpeting and acoustic foam.
- You can attach the foam panels to the wall in different ways.
- On the one hand, you can cut a kind of underlay from a plywood sheet. You can get such a plate very cheaply at the hardware store, where the employees can also be cut to size.
- Now you should think about the suspension. For example, you can hammer nails into the wall and then drill correspondingly large holes in the base plate. So you can easily and easily hang the plate on the nails. However, make sure beforehand where the power lines are running.
- You can then attach the foam sheet to this plywood sheet. Use either a spray adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape for this.
- To cover the foam panels, you can build a wooden frame of the appropriate size. We have already shown you how to do this in a small guide. You can then cover this wooden frame with the fabric of your choice and hang it over the plate.
- You can of course generally use any fabric as a fabric, but there is also a special acoustic fabric. This ensures a more professional look and does not stand in the way of the effect of the foam panels.
- Be sure to place the absorbers behind the speaker or microphone. Especially with microphones with cardioid characteristics, a large part of the reverberation is caused by the reflected sound. Therefore, you should provide the wall behind the microphone with absorbers.
