Many cameras can take pictures in RAW and JPG. We'll tell you whether RAW or JPG is better for you.
RAW or JPG - a comparison
- Compression: Images in JPG format are automatically compressed by the camera. In RAW format, as the name suggests, the images remain in the "raw" and thus unprocessed state.
- Compatibility: JPG photos can be read on any computer with all programs. Special software is usually required to process RAW images.
- Speed: RAW images put a lot of strain on the camera. The pictures take a few seconds to be processed, so that a quick snap is usually not possible.
- Editing: Settings such as contrast, saturation, noise reduction and sharpness are adopted directly in JPG format. This does not happen in RAW format, the image remains largely untreated.
- Contrasts: RAW images work better in light and dark areas because, in contrast to JPG 16.384, they make it possible to use 256 levels of brightness instead of just 256.
Conclusion: JPG or RAW?
JPG saves space and does most of the work for you. However, the RAW format usually achieves better photo results because the quality is higher.
