If you want to switch off the spell checker in Word - for example, if you are working in a document in which many words from two different languages appear, you can do this using the options. Using Microsoft Word 2007 as an example, we explain how it's done.
How to turn off spell checking in Word
- First open Word.
- Click on the button with the "Word symbol" at the top left of the screen and then on "Word Options" at the bottom right.
- Now a new window opens and you are in the "Word Options". Now click on "Document check" in the left column - Microsoft uses this cryptic term to hide the settings for the automatic spell check.
- This area is divided into four sub-groups - the one that is relevant to you is "When correcting spelling and grammar in Word".
- Here you have to remove the checkmarks from the following five points:
- "Check spelling as you type", "Use contextual spelling", "Highlight grammatical errors as you type", "Check grammar along with spelling" and "Show legibility statistics" (see image).
- Now confirm the new settings for the spell check with "OK".
