Not only when the weather is nice, but also in the rain, photography can be really fun. You discover motifs in a completely new light and can let your creativity run free. We have put together the best tips for taking pictures in the rain here.
Photographing rain: the right equipment
The most important tip: Protect yourself and especially your equipment from the wet:
- It's best to wear a rain cape, because that protects you and your backpack, for example. Always wear suitable clothing. A rain-deflecting bag for your camera can also be useful.
- Take an umbrella with you and protect both yourself and your equipment. For example, stick the umbrella in your jacket so that you can take hands-free photos. Alternatively, you can protect the camera with a transparent plastic bag, which you put over the camera and then fix it with a rubber band. Also cut a hole to get a clear view.
- Always take a microfiber cloth with you as you can always wipe the camera clean and, above all, remove water from the sensitive lens.
- When changing objects in the rain, also make sure to always stand with your back to the wind direction. This is the best way to protect the camera from the rain.
Photography: Find new objects and motifs in the rain
The rain offers at least as many beautiful motifs as you already know from the nice weather. Here are some examples to watch out for.
- Pay special attention to windows when it rains. These are ideal for catching the water drops running down and placing them in front of a beautiful backdrop. You can either sit in a car or take pictures from home.
- Take macro shots in the rain or afterwards, such as in nature. Catch drops of water on leaves or take great pictures of animals, such as insects.
- Pay attention to reflections caused, for example, by puddles. You can photograph falling water drops as well as people, objects and buildings that are reflected in them.

Photograph falling rain in motion - how it works
Rain that is dripping on the earth is not so easy to photograph. However, you can do it with a trick. To do this, you have to make certain settings.
- The best way to photograph falling rain is to lower the ISO number and increase the aperture at the same time. This makes it easier for you to capture the rain with the camera.
- Of course, the right settings vary depending on many factors, such as the available light, the object itself and the intensity of the rain. Try out the settings and find the optimal setting for your rain picture.
- If you set the ISO number particularly low and the aperture particularly high, overexposure may result. To avoid this, it is worth using an ND filter, i.e. a neutral density filter.
You can still create the rain on your photos afterwards. Another practical tip shows you how to create rain using Adobe Photoshop.
