Zipper procedure according to StVO: This is how the system works
So that the flow of traffic is not hindered when the roadway narrows, the so-called zipper procedure applies. We explain to you exactly how the system works and what you as a driver have to watch out for.
Zipper procedure according to StVO: An explanation
Construction sites on the motorway in particular lead to the loss of a lane and thus to the zipper procedure. Section 7 (4) of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) defines this as follows:
- "If on streets with several lanes for one direction it is not possible to drive through one lane continuously or if one lane ends, vehicles that are prevented from driving on must be able to switch to the adjacent lane in such a way that these vehicles immediately before the narrowing begins be able to classify alternately according to a vehicle traveling on the continuous lane (zipper method). "
This is how the system works
If a lane is blocked on the motorway, appropriate signs point this out in good time. If there is an increased risk of traffic jams because the route is busy, the sign "zipper" is also noted on the sign. The sign also shows how many meters away the zipper starts.
- If you are driving on the lane that will soon end, you should drive on the lane to the end if possible. Only at the end of the lane do you thread yourself into the continuing lane.
- As with a zipper, a car travels through the continuing lane, then a car follows the ending lane, then another car follows the continuing lane.
- In this process, the drivers on both lanes must be careful and considerate of each other. If the zipper folds as it should, large jams are prevented.
The most common mistakes in the zipper procedure
Unfortunately, not everything runs smoothly with the zipper method.
- The biggest mistake is putting it in too early. Therefore, only change lanes when they end immediately.
- If you are in the free lane, you must of course also let the car in next to you, but only one. If you don't leave one or more cars in front of you, the whole system comes to a standstill.
- If there is not too much traffic at the moment, you have to be particularly careful with the zipper method and let go of the gas.
- Failure to observe the zipper can result in a fine of 20 euros. To do this, however, the police must be in your immediate vicinity.
