Cancellation insurance: useful or not - the check
There are many pitfalls with travel cancellation insurance - especially if you book it together with a trip. Supplementary insurance is not always sensible, on the contrary: in the event of damage, it can be quite expensive.
Cancellation insurance: useful or ruthless rip-off?
Booking portals aggressively promote supplementary insurance. Travel cancellation insurance is one of the most popular insurance policies and one of the largest rip-off methods:
- Booking portals don't earn much on flights these days: Because of the many price comparisons, the portals undercut each other. The new source of income is therefore called: extras, extras, extras.
- The magazine "Reise + Prices" took a closer look at the travel cancellation insurance policies of numerous German booking portals. The result is catastrophic: customers are ruthlessly ripped off. See the paragraph below for details.
The tricks of the booking portals: travel cancellation insurance, insolvency insurance and much more
- You can insure yourself against almost everything - with Tripsta even against the airline's bankruptcy. That costs an impressive 29.99 euros.
- The result of the check at "Travel + Prices": Almost all insurance on the booking portals is far too expensive. Those who insure themselves travel cheaper.

Cancellation insurance: four times "not recommended"
- Four portals received the rating "not recommended": Tripsta, Fluege.de, Cheaptickets and Flugladen.
- The reason: The insurance policies were more than twice as expensive as those taken out directly from an insurance company.
Large portals disappoint in the travel insurance check
- Opodo and Expedia are "recommendable with restrictions", according to the experts of the travel magazine.
- The reason: there was nothing to complain about in terms of price, but the reimbursement was too low.

No flight booking portal is "highly recommended"
- The travel experts rated the insurance from Fly.de, Ebookers and McFlight as "recommended".
- However, not a single booking portal received the top grade "highly recommended".
The travel insurance guide
- With such a devastating judgment, the question arises: Do you need travel insurance at all?
- Protection for travel within Europe is included in almost all normal health insurance plans. For worldwide travel there are additional insurance policies starting at 8 euros per year. As a rule, private health insurance policies always have protection for trips around the world.
- Do you really need insurance against the airline's bankruptcy? Most airlines are unlikely to have to file for bankruptcy. So think carefully about whether you need insurance at all.
- Don't let yourself be unsettled either: The travel experts criticize the fact that booking portals specifically scare customers. Sentences like "Do you really want no protection, every third traveler is already ill on vacation" should urge customers to take out insurance.
