Reserve tank: You can still drive that far
If the fuel runs out while driving, the question arises how far you can still drive with the reserve tank. You can find out which routes are still possible and how you can possibly drive a few meters further in our article.
Reserve tank: These distances are still possible
If the reserve tank light flashes, you do not need to panic. Your car will not stop within the next five kilometers. You can find out when you should visit a petrol station at the latest:
- In general, you should calculate a maximum range of around 50 kilometers. You won't get much further with your remaining fuel. It also depends a lot on where and how you are driving. If you are traveling on the highway or have to brake and accelerate very often, the tank may already be empty.
- You can also calculate the range for your vehicle. To do this, refer to the operating instructions for the volume of your tank. Now drive until the tank changes to the reserve. Then fill up your vehicle and subtract the tanked amount from the total volume of the tank. The difference indicates the size of your reserve tank.
- Now you only need your average consumption for the calculation. You can either calculate it yourself or read it from the on-board computer for a new vehicle. Then divide the remaining tank content by the average consumption and multiply the result by 100. The calculated result then shows you how far you can still drive with your reserve tank on average.
- Note: You should never drive your vehicle completely empty, as this can damage the engine. Fines are also possible if, for example, you stand on the highway with an empty tank.
Reserve tank: So you get a few meters more out
After we have told you how far you can still go with your reserve tank, we are now going to give you some tips that can help you save fuel and so on:
- First, you should adjust your driving style. If possible, drive in a lower speed range and avoid strong accelerations or braking maneuvers. If you are approaching a traffic light, you should take your foot off the accelerator pedal and leave the gear engaged well before you save fuel.
- As soon as the reserve light is switched on, we recommend that you switch off all unnecessary consumers. These include, for example, the air conditioning, heating and radio. All additional consumers increase your fuel consumption and ensure that you have to end your journey sooner.
