Create responsive websites with templates
Responsive web design is becoming increasingly important when creating websites - it is easier with templates. We show you which flexible templates are available.
Templates for various content management systems
Templates, i.e. design templates for your own website, are only ever designed for a specific content management system (CMS). So you have to find your own templates for the CMS you are using. If you have not yet decided on a system, you can read a comparison of WordPress, BlogSpot and Tumblr and the top 5 free content management systems here.
Responsive templates for WordPress:
- WordPress offers free responsive templates for your website on its own homepage. Many free design templates are linked on many websites, such as here.
- After the download you have to load the extracted folder into the file system on your web server. The corresponding folder can be found in the regular WordPress system under "wordpress> wp-content> themes". You can then insert the new responsive layout in the Wordpress backend under the "Design" tab.
- The content of your website should now automatically appear on mobile phones and tablets in a mobile view. Just consider the compatibility with any plugins or add-ons on your page - these may not be compatible with the new template.
Joomla: Responsive templates
- Although Joomla does not offer any templates here itself, the selection of designs on different websites is as large as with WordPress. Here you can find, for example, a first selection of 25 different free templates.
- On the admin page of your Joomla website, you can select the downloaded .zip file via "Browse" under "Install / Uninstall" in the "Extensions" tab and then implement it with the "Upload & Install" button.
- While simple content such as text and images adapt well to the new, dynamic layout, you have to be careful again when it comes to extensions and plug-ins from Joomla. You may also need to adjust a few things here.
Regardless of whether you only adapt your page responsively or set it up from scratch - compatibility with mobile devices is very important these days. In the meantime, usable dynamic templates are available for all common CMS and make it very easy to be able to display your content on all devices. If you want to program the template from scratch, we offer you instructions for the Joomla system.
