How to save old CDs and DVDs
CDs and DVDs are easily damaged, so you need to save the data on the media. An industrially recorded CD / DVD is said to have a lifespan of 15 to 50 years. However, even the smallest scratches cause problems. We show you how you can still save your data carriers.
First steps to save a CD or DVD
Analysis: Scratches on the underside of the CD / DVD can usually be repaired. However, if there is a striking scratch on the top of the data carrier, it is very difficult to save the data.
- Drive: For example, if the disc does not work properly in your DVD player, try a different drive than your computer. Different drives can deal with certain errors differently and even hide them.
- Make a copy: If the disk runs properly on your computer, make a copy of the files and simply burn them to a new disk.
Programs for saving data on CDs and DVDs
If the data on your CD / DVD is damaged, Windows stops reading the data with every error. Programs like CD Recovery Toolbox and DataRescue DD specialize in data recovery in such cases.
- If you have installed one of the programs and insert the disk into the drive, it is first analyzed. The CD / DVD is read several times - both from the front and from the back. In this way, all data can often be put together correctly.
- After analysis, you can copy data that has been restored to your hard drive.
- If the programs do not help you, continue with the next step and then use the program again.
Repair damaged CDs and DVDs with toothpaste
If all tips have failed before, you can lend a hand yourself. Toothpaste is used to remove a small part of the polycarbonate protective layer on the data carrier. The depth of the scratches and the resulting refraction of the laser is reduced.
- If possible, only use white toothpaste without colored additives.
- Spread some toothpaste on the underside of the CD / DVD and work it into the disk using circular paper with household paper.
- Let the toothpaste work for about a minute and then wash the disc thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Before you insert the CD / DVD into a drive, it must be completely dry. Even the smallest water residue can damage the hardware.
Professional help
- If all of this does not help, you can approach the problem with more professional means. There are repair kits like the PEARL PE-2944 for around 30 euros. These polish your data media.
- Most video stores also have such machines. There you can have your CDs / DVDs cleaned and saved for little money.
To ensure that your data is not lost, you should regularly backup all of your data. You can find out how this works under Winodws 7 in this practical tip.
