DIY natural cosmetics: Make flower extract for marigold ointment yourself
You definitely need orange-yellow flowers and oil to make your marigold ointment because the potent active ingredients are poorly water-soluble. However, they dissolve very well in olive oil. A good smell of marigold ointment is also guaranteed. How we use olive oil for the skin is shown in another article. The active ingredients of the flowers can only develop their anti-inflammatory effects with the right ingredients - so pay close attention to the following recipe. Then the homemade marigold ointment is very suitable for many skin infections and some open areas. It also soothes the skin in the event of sunburn or small bruises, i.e. bruises. First, we'll show you how to make the flower extract.
- Heat water to about 70 degrees for a water bath.
- Now put two full hands of marigold flowers in about 200 ml of olive oil in your processing vessel. A stainless steel bowl is best suited here.
- Now warm up the oil with the flowers in the water bath. The period should be limited to approximately 30 minutes. Be careful when tempering and pay attention to the approx. 70 degrees of the water bath, since the mass must not boil under any circumstances.
- Then cool the mass down a little. The oil and flowers should now be separated. Use a fine linen cloth for this. A little tip when separating: Place a fine sieve over a bowl. Then put the cloth in it. Pour the mass into the cloth and tap the frame of the sieve with a heavy spoon. This way, the liquid is transported through the cloth better and a little faster.
- After the whole process, you can mix the extract with the ointment base as described in the next section. It is important that the cooling process has already progressed.

You can use the healthy beeswax as the ointment base. If you are allergic to pollen, you should avoid it. Wool wax, known as lanolin, is also suitable. The option of using panthenol ointment as a carrier is a slightly more expensive option. To do this, you strengthen the healing effect through the good basis of panthenol. You are probably familiar with this as Bepanthensalbe.
- Warm up your water bath to around 45 degrees.
- In a bowl, let 40 grams of beeswax melt over the water bath. We explain in detail how you melt wax in another article. If you use lanolin or Bepanthen as a base, the required amount is reduced to 35 grams each.
- Then, while stirring constantly, gradually add the flower extract, which has cooled to 45 degrees. Mix in a little at a time and wait until a homogeneous mass has formed by stirring.
- If you have incorporated the whole marigold extract, let the ointment cool. You should continue to stir without interruption.
- When the ointment has reached room temperature, you can fill it. Since the ointment must be kept protected from light, small amber jars are recommended.
- The ointment filled in this way can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three months. Since the shelf life of natural cosmetics is limited, you should note the date of manufacture on the glasses.
