You have probably already wondered what the scroll key on your keyboard is all about. In this practical tip, we clarify which function the key still has today.
Scroll key on the keyboard: that's what it's really there for
The scroll key on the keyboard is a relic from a bygone era. The classic PC mouse as we know it has not always had a scroll wheel, let alone the mouse was present on every PC.
- In many models, the scroll key can be found on the top right of your keyboard between "Print / S-Abf" and "Pause / Break".
- If the "Scroll" function is activated, you can scroll through a document using the arrow keys without the cursor moving.
- In rare cases, programs even offer support for the key: With Excel 2007, you can scroll through the table with the role function activated without leaving the selected column.
- The role key also has a function in TeamViewer: All keyboard shortcuts are executed on your own PC when the role function is activated.
- If you work in the Linux terminal, you can also use the role function. This allows you to scroll through the window using the arrow keys.
