Remove red eyes with GIMP
Red eyes in photos are annoying - but easy to remove thanks to digital image processing. This even works with the free "Gimp" software in just a few steps - you don't even need any special Photoshop knowledge.
How To Remove The Red Eyes In Gimp
- So that you really only change the red eyes and do not accidentally change the color of other parts of the photo, you must select the "Free selection" button in the toolbox and circle the red eye.
- In the "Selection" menu, select "Hide" and you have already activated the selected area for further editing. Each intervention now relates to the marked area.
- In the next step click on the brush, choose a color (we recommend black) and select either "Color" or "Overlay" in the mode.
- Color: With this you can bleach the eye a little. You can vary the strength with the opacity control.
- Overlay: In this mode you blacken the eye - so it becomes darker and grayer. Here, too, you can regulate the strength with the opacity.
- In both cases, the photo is often more authentic if you use the brush to add a small white highlight to the center of the eye.
The current version of Gimp can be found free of charge in our download area. Get more tips and free red-eye removal tools here. These instructions refer to a system with Windows 7 and Gimp 2.8.4.
