With router blacklists, you can block websites before data is transferred to your computer. We explain in general how URLs are blocked with router blacklists and show you the example of a Sitecom router.
Create router blacklist
With a router blacklist, you can block websites for your entire network. This is an effective way to protect children and young people, to protect against viruses or to keep yourself or others away from your favorite distractions. This works in three steps, which are then documented in the image gallery using the example of the Sitecom N300 router with screenshots.
- Log in to the router using your browser.
- Navigate to the blacklist menu and activate it.
- Research Internet addresses to be blocked and enter them individually or together in the blacklist.
1st step to router blacklist: router login
To block individual websites via a blacklist in the router, you must first log in. This works by entering the IP or the address of your router in the address line of your browser and then entering your user data. These are either in the instructions for use of your device or on the back of the device.
- This practical tip shows you how to get the IP address of your router. Most of the time this IP is "192.168.0.1" or "192.168.1.1".
- If you have a Fritzbox, you can log in to the browser by entering "//fritz.box". This practical tip offers more tips on the Fritzbox.
- Log into the Alice Router as described in these instructions under "alice.box".
- Logging into the Vodafone Easy Box is explained here.
2nd step to router blacklist: blacklist area
The blacklist can often be found in one of the following submenus:
- Blacklist settings belong to the "Internet" area.
- There is usually a menu item called "Firewall", Filter ", " Blacklist "or" URL Blocking ".
- You can find out how to call up the blacklist in the Fritzbox on the manufacturer's website.
- If you do not find a suitable area in the user interface and the instructions for use do not provide any information, your router probably does not support a blacklist function.
Step 3: Create a blacklist
Now enter the URLs, i.e. web addresses, in the router that you want to block. If you only want to block individual pages, such as YouTube or images, this is quickly done. However, if you want to block pages with viruses, pornography or shopping websites as extensively as possible, URL lists will help you:
- On the Alexa website you can find out the most visited websites in Germany or worldwide. If you copy the first hundred URLs from the "Adults" section to your blacklist, you have blocked the most popular pages for adults.
- Of course you can also look at other categories such as "News", "Sport" or "Shopping".
- If you download the list of Shalla Secure Services, you will find URL lists sorted by category in the archive, which you can open in the editor. These are very extensive, but unfortunately written without a period and a comma.
