Routers can also be hacked. This is often because users do not back up their devices accordingly.
- A popular attack method is the so-called "DNS hijacking", whereby some pages are redirected to similar looking websites. Sensitive data can be tapped. However, there is a tool on the Internet that can help you to detect such an attack.
- In the admin interface of your router you will usually find an overview of devices that are in the network. Check whether you know all the devices listed. Otherwise you can block unwanted entries.
Fraudsters tried to fool phone users
The network agency is currently warning of fraudsters who have hacked into routers and tried to trick users.
- According to the network agency, fraudsters have hacked routers and tried to charge telephone users with high fees for calls abroad.
- Two cases in Hesse were reported, in which damage over 50, 000 euros occurred.
- In just a short time, more than 12, 000 connections abroad were made. However, the network agency has prohibited billing these connections and whether providers transfer money abroad is also questionable.
- Similar cases have been reported by the network agency since the end of 2013. However, these did not cause as much damage to those affected.
Hacked routers - this is how you can protect yourself
- An important measure is to regularly update the firmware on your router. Most manufacturers continue to roll out updates after the purchase to eliminate security gaps.
- Check the configuration of your firewall. This should only allow access that is really necessary.
- If you operate a WLAN router, protect it with a password and change it regularly. The use of standard passwords also carries risks: With many WLAN routers, the preset password can be calculated within seconds. In the worst case, strangers can secure total control of your network.
- You should change device passwords from the default passwords to your own when setting up your devices.
